Yearly plans usually come with a discount. On a €10 monthly service, "two months free" means paying €100 for the year instead of €120. That looks like an easy win for one click. It isn't always.
The math most people skip
Say a service costs €10 a month or €96 a year, a 20% discount for paying upfront. Two questions matter more than the discount:
- How confident are you that you'll still be using this service in 12 months?
- What does it cost you to lock up €96 today instead of paying €10 each month?
If you stop using the service in month 8, you paid €96 for eight months of use. That's €12 a month, more than the monthly plan would have cost. The discount disappeared, and you still paid for months you weren't using it.
When the yearly plan is the right call
- You've used the service for 3+ months and still reach for it weekly.
- You don't expect your income or habits to change in the next year.
- There's no cheaper team, family, or lifetime plan available.
- The vendor has a reasonable refund or pause policy.
When monthly is the safer move
- You started the subscription in the last 60 days.
- You subscribed for a specific project, trip, or season.
- A better-priced competitor is likely to launch soon.
- Your cash flow is tight and €96 is real money today.
“A discount is only a discount if you would have paid full price. Otherwise it's just a prepayment for something you may not need.”
A simple rule that works
Stick with monthly for the first three billing cycles. If you're still using the service and have no reason to expect a change, switch to the yearly plan at the start of month four. You get the discount without risking prepaid months on a service you might leave.
